Kim Gordon founded the teen blog Popcosmo, along with her daughter Chloe, after moving to Louisville a couple years ago. Kim has worn many hats in the career world, including being an attorney and a teacher. Popcosmo keeps its finger on the pulse of fashion, beauty, school, food and crafts in the teen world, and we’re excited to introduce you to the woman who works tirelessly to make it all happen.

What do you do for a living?

I co-founded the blog Popcosmo with my daughter, Chloe, last year. We started out as a website for teens around the Louisville area, but once we began consistently reaching an international audience of more than teens, and we hit more than 1 million pageviews, we decided to rebrand. We are undergoing a makeover, but will still be Popcosmo, just now for girls and women of all ages.

How hard is it to start a blog from scratch?

So easy that anybody could start one now and have a live blog within an hour. It’s sort of like a diet, journal, or resolution: starting is a breeze.

How much of the workload is on you and how much is on Chloe?

I do the behind-the-scenes work: the business side and correspondence. Chloe creates the ideas, graphic design, and photography. We both do our DIYs, which leads to laughter, fails or high-fives. Or all three. Our stories were a collaborative effort, but when we rebrand, we each plan to write from our own perspective. Since she’s also in school, if Chloe has too much to do, I’ll jump in. School comes first. Period.

How do you balance your job and your personal life?

Terribly.

What is the biggest life lesson you have ever learned?

Go with the flow and never, ever, ever say “never.”

Who is your mentor?

The online community is incredibly helpful and assists regularly with Internet and social media questions. Jeff, Shane, the Louisville Bloggers Network and more have been wonderfully supportive.

My very first mentor was Cathy, the partner I worked for fresh out of law school at a large New York City law firm. She was a successful, yet unpretentious, partner who took me under her wing, treated me with respect, and most of all, showed true grace under pressure. As my first boss in an aggressive field, she gave me the self-confidence in business that I hope I can help foster in others, especially our interns and young guest bloggers.

If you were not in your current job, what would you secretly love to do?

This is my secret love: I’m a geek who loves tech, fashion, and everything girly. I’m doing precisely what I love to do.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

As a teen, an entire nest of bees stung me. On my head. My stomach still goes into knots when I hear a tiny bee go “bzzz,” so I try to stay calm, because at my age running away would look absurd.

What is your favorite place to go out to eat in Louisville?

Proof at 21C. I’m an incredibly picky eater, but I could eat everything on their menu.

Where do you like to shop?

Online at Zappos, Nordstrom, Shopbop, REI, and RueLaLa because of their generous return policies, and everywhere in NYC because I love to window shop more than anything. In Louisville, I love Serendipity, because they have a little bit of everything, plus helpful and cheerful saleswomen. I also love the free personal shoppers at J.Crew.

What is a treat or a luxury you do for yourself?

Workout. And it’s more for everyone around me since I’m unbearable if I don’t. But since I enjoy it and treat it as a luxury, I’m more apt to do it daily.

What is your weakness?

Chocolate and reality t.v., both of which I find utterly addicting.

What is your favorite thing to do in Louisville?

Not drive. I love that my neighborhood is completely walk-able for just about anything I need or want.

Three things you cannot live without (besides God, family and friends):

Curiosity, inspiration, and a can’t-put-it-down book.

What are you reading right now?

A YA Lit book called The Eternity Cure sent to me by Harlequin Teen by, serendipitously, Louisville author Julie Kagawa, a New York Times bestselling author.

What are three of your “favorite” things right now (can be anything).

Right now they are: the sound of my kids’ laughter, boyfriend jeans, and Downton Abbey. Yep, it’s Sunday!
