A hairstyle that is formed by cutting the hair short on the the top and sides and allowing it to grow longer in back.

How fabulous are these terms from other languages! Mulettus? Mole? Mullos? God, I love the dictionary. And let me introduce you to the embodiment of this term.

Hem problem? Drunk seamstress? No, it’s intentional.
Allow me to introduce you to a fashion trend that is seemingly acceptable. Unlike the haircut of the same moniker, this is a mullet dress. Also known as a cutaway or breakaway hem.
I’m going to be honest. I’m on the fence on this trend. However, it seems as though all designers from Alexander McQueen to Urban Outfitters are presenting some version of the mullet dress as part of their lineups this spring. So, I’m missing something.
For further validation, look no further than to celebrities at the Met Ball.
You definitely do not have to spend a fortune like above dresses. The ones below are from Forever 21 and Urban Outfitters.
Maybe it’s the name I cannot wrap my head around?
Maybe it’s because I’m self-conscious of anything that short. Though I do appreciate more coverage in the back.
Maybe it’s because I can’t see spending a lot of money on something so trendy.
However, I do enjoy this facet of the trend. A regular hemline with an extra long train. Reminds me of Princess Diana…
She is a blink away from completely falling on her cute little Hannah Montana face. But I like the dress. There, I said it.
Here’s what I cannot like (all shown in the example below):
- Elastic waistband.
- With what appears to be bike shorts underneath.
- With what appears to be car wash sheer panels on top.
- All paired with two black baked potatoes as shoes.
So ladies, be mindful of this trend. It seems as though it can go south in a hurry if you are not careful about the length, material and overall appropriateness of the dress or skirt.
But, we could call it another name. How about the Mixi. Combination mini and maxi? I cannot utter the word “mullet” one more time.
